A friend to everybody is a friend to nobody．滥交无真友。
此谚语的意思是与每个人都交朋友，看似朋友很多，但滥交朋友就不一定能交到真正的好朋友，没有好朋友就等于没有朋友。
主张交友不宜滥的还有两句谚语：
Better be alone than in bad company．
交损友不如无友。
Have but few friends, though many acquaintances．
结交可多，朋友应少。
而且朋友太多还有一个害处，正如下一句谚语所说：
Friends are thieves of time．
朋友是时间的浪费者。
所以交友不在广，首先应该选择双方都愿意交朋友，是否志同道合等，即：
Friendship cannot stand always on one side．
友谊是双方的。
有些朋友讲得天花乱坠，也不是真正的朋友，这可见另一句：All are not friends that speak us fair.（34）。 至于一些口是心非的假朋友就更不能结交：Better an open enemy than a false friend.
