A friend in need is a friend indeed．患难朋友才是真朋友。
此谚语巧妙地运用了重复的修辞法，动词is前的部分和其后的部分形、声几乎完全相同，使句子更简洁有力，容易记忆。
谚语的意思是，患难之中友情不变的才是真正的朋友；反过来，如果在得意的时候也许朋友很多，而他们大多是有求于你的，那就不一定是真朋友。也许你一旦失势，有些人就可能会抛弃你。这类只能共安乐、不能共患难的朋友，在英语中称为fair weather friends。
