Virtue is its own reward．美德本身就是美德的报酬。
此谚语的意思是，一个真正有道德的人，做了好事后，自觉心情愉快。这就是已得到了报酬，他不会想到还要有什么物质上或名誉上的任何报酬。
关于美德的谚语颇多，如：

To be virtuous is to do good．
为善就是德。
总之，美德就是为善，真正的为善者是不求报酬的；为善而要报酬，就不是美德。所以可以说为善本身就是目的，而不是手段。孔子说：“求仁得仁，有何怨乎？”“求仁”就是做善事，做了善事就达到目的了，还有什么其他目的没有达到而抱怨呢！
