Catch not at the shadow and lose the substance．不要追逐假象而丢掉本质
这句谚语源自公元前一世纪编订的希腊《伊索寓言》（Aesop\’s Fables），内有这样的一个故事：一头狗嘴里衔着一块骨头，经过池塘边，看见自己在水中的倒影，便贪婪地想张嘴抢夺水中狗的骨头，怎知一张嘴，自己的骨头就掉入水里。这就是抓到影子，丢了实物。
用另一个说法就是：You cannot see the substance for the shadow，意思是不能从一件事的假象来认识其本质。
近义谚语还有以下三句：
Don\’t fight with your own shadow！
别乱说一通/不要无的放矢！
You cannot see the wood for the trees．
不能只见树木，不见森林。（以偏概全）
A man is not good or bad for one action．
一个人的好坏，不能单看他的偶一行为。
以上都是提醒人们观察事物不能只见现象，不见本质；只看局部，不看整体。
