Death is the grand leveller．死亡是最好的平衡器。
句中grand的原义是“雄伟的、壮丽的”，这里则表示“最好的（best）”之义。
这句谚语在修辞上用的是暗喻，如果用明喻应该说“死亡好像是个最准确的平衡器”，其意思是人们到了死亡时一律平等，不分贵贱贫富，所以劝告人们在有生之年，不要专门争权夺利，比地位高低，到头来一死之后，还不是一律平等？正如还有一些谚语所说的：
In the grave the rich and poor lie equal．
一朝入墓穴，贫富皆一律。
We shall lie all alike in our graves．
