None but fools and knaves lay wagers．只有傻子和骗子才喜欢打赌。
句中wager作为名词，意思是“赌注”或“赌博”。wager还有一个同义词bet，但bet也可用作动词“打赌”。lay a wager（bet）意谓“打赌”，win a wager（bet）是“打赌得胜”，lose a wage（bet）是“打赌失败”。
所谓“打赌”只是一种投机行为，甚至是一种欺骗手法，只有骗子靠打赌去赢赌注，也只有傻子才会受骗上当，所以谚语指出一般正当的人是不屑做的。
