Neither a borrower nor a lender be．既不做借债人，也不做放债人。
此谚语来自莎士比亚名剧《王子复仇记》（Hamlet）。这是一句倒装了的祈使句。一般完整的写法是：You should be neither a borrower nor a lender。现在改成祈使句，去掉了主语，又为了强调Neither …nor …把它移到句首，把be移到句末，就成为以上这句谚语。
劝人勿放债的谚语还有：
Lend your money and lose your friend．
借出你的钱，失去了友谊。
When I lent I had a friend; when I asked, he was unkind．
借钱时是朋友，讨债时伤和气。
有句葡萄牙谚语，译成英语是：
If you would make an enemy, lend a man money and ask it of him again．

脱债就脱险。
中国有句俗语：“站着放债，跪着讨债。”意思就是“放债容易讨债难。”
