The father buys, the son bigs, the grandchild sells, and his son thigs．父买，子扩建，孙儿卖，曾孙街上当乞丐。
谚语是由四个简短的并列分句合成的复合句。每个分句只用一个主语一个动词，而且为了两句一押韵，第二分句与第四分句用了两个很特殊的动词。big本来是形容词，这里作动词用，有扩大之意。thig本来没有这个词，是从thieve缩改成的，这只能说是谚语的特色，原意“偷窃”，中文译作“当乞丐”，可与“卖”押韵。
这句谚语第一层意思是创业难，守业更不易。另有一些谚语表达同样意思：
He who gets does much, but he who keeps does more．
花大力得到的，还要花更大力来保持。
Keeping is harder than winning．
守业难于创业。
第二层意思是大人物的子孙少出息，也有一句谚语，表达同样意思：
Great men\’s sons seldom do well．
大人物的儿子很少有为。
历史的事实也正是如此。一般第一代皇帝总是英明有为的，因为他的江山是自己打来的，能知创业的艰难。而其后代往往一代不如一代，因为他们都是靠父兄余荫而登上高位，既不知创业的艰难，也没有尝过人生的辛苦，只知道骑在人民头上作威作福，所以终至为人民所唾弃。这个历史教训，到今天还很有现实意义。
