He that climbs high falls heavily．爬得高，跌得重。
一个物体离地越高，落到地上的冲击力就越大，这本来是一种自然现象。但拿来比喻社会现象也完全适合。而中英两句谚语用同一比喻说明同一现象，可见这现象颇具普遍性。
这句谚语第一层意思是说明地位愈高，责任愈重，招受人家的妒忌也愈多，因此其境遇也愈危险。正如另一些谚语所说：
Great winds blow upon high hills．
高山招大风。
A tall tree catches the wind．
树大招风。
但是有些人明知险境，还是为个人名利所驱使，不辞艰险，永不知足，不断向上爬。这个“爬（climb）”，不论用正当手段或不正当手段，都是很吃力的，也可能要付出“跌（fall）”的代价。
还有一句谚语：
The higher the mountain the greater the descent．
山愈高，坡度愈大。
