Seeing is believing．眼见为真。
此句也可写作：To see is to believe．
这是一句很有名的谚语，同样的意思可以有几种不同的说法，例如：Only the things seen are believable，we only believe whatever is seen等，但都没有首句简单明了。
有时也可用“耳闻”来陪衬“目见”，例如：
Words are but wind．
这意思是听到的话是不可信的，只有亲眼见到才可信。这就相当于中国成语“耳闻不如目见”。
应该说目见是直接的，耳闻是间接的，直接的当然可靠，间接的就不一定可靠：
Believe nothing of what you hear, and only half of what you see．
听到的不足信，见到的也只能半信。
但也有一句意思似乎相反的谚语：
Choose a wife rather by your ear than your eyes．
选择妻子宁可靠耳朵，不要靠眼睛。
这里所谓用眼不可靠，主要是因为只看到表面没看到内心，所以还不如多听听人家的反映或是听听其本人的谈吐，反而真实一点。
另一方面，看得太多、太清楚，愈是不相信：
The more one knows, the less one believes．
知得愈多，信任愈小。
