If “ifs”and “ans”were pots and pans… 设想不能变成瓶瓶罐罐。
这条谚语省略了主句，只留下一个假设从句，用的是虚拟语气。既然用了虚拟语气，省略部分就不言而喻，意思是设想不能成为现实的，也就是中国成语所谓“画饼充饥”是不现实的。
句中an在古英语中为if的同义词。这里用了if又用an，意思是“假设”再多也不能成为现实。
谚语出自英国童谣“Mother Goose\’s Nursery”，原文是：

Were pots and pans,
There\’d be no work for tinkers！（tinkers是小修小补的人）
还有一句谚语也是用虚拟语气表示这意思：
